After around eight months, former ManUnited coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time at Besiktas Istanbul has come to an end.
Shortly after being eliminated in the Conference League play-offs, Besiktas Istanbul is on the hunt for a new coach. The Black Eagles lost 1-0 at home to Swiss club FC Lausanne-Sport on Thursday evening. As a result, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must now pack his bags on the Bosphorus.
In a brief statement, Besiktas announced the dismissal of the 52-year-old Norwegian: “Our contract with head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a unanimous decision by the board. After the board meeting, club president Serdal Adali thanked Solskjaer for his services to the club to date,” the Turkish club said.
Besiktas misses out on international competition
Despite a respectable record—Solskjaer won 15 of his 29 games as Besiktas coach—the Norwegian had recently become a controversial figure in the Turkish metropolis. In particular, the failure to qualify for the Europa League against Shakhtar Donetsk had increased the pressure on the former striker. After the second elimination in the qualifiers and missing out on international competition, the consequences have now been drawn.
More than three years after his last coaching job at Manchester United, Solskjaer took over at Besiktas in January 2025. Around eight months later, the collaboration has now come to a premature end. The Black Eagles have not announced a successor. In recent weeks, however, the name of former Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin has been circulating at Besiktas.
