During his basketball career, Gilbert Arenas was named an NBA All-Star several times. However, he was forced to take a long break due to an incident involving weapons. Now he is in trouble with the law.
Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has been arrested and charged with organizing illegal poker games involving large sums of money. The 43-year-old is accused, along with five other men, including an alleged member of an Israeli criminal organization, of running an illegal gambling ring at Arenas’ estate in Los Angeles. This was announced by the US Attorney’s Office.
Arenas is also alleged to have made false statements to the authorities. The former professional basketball player pleaded not guilty at a hearing on Wednesday and was released on bail of $50,000. The trial is scheduled to take place on September 23. If convicted, Arenas faces several years in prison.
Incident with weapons in the locker room
In his eleven-year NBA career, he averaged more than 20 points per game and was named to the All-Star Team of the best and most popular players three times. The former guard was suspended for the entire 2010 season after bringing guns into the locker room with a teammate while playing for the Washington Wizards. The two had argued over a card game.
Arenas was nicknamed Agent Zero during his career because of his jersey number, 0. He is also referred to by this name in the indictment. A recent Netflix documentary focused primarily on the locker room incident. In it, Arenas insisted that he had changed and was no longer the “Agent Zero” type of person.
