National coach Alex Mumbru has named 16 players in the preliminary squad for the European Championship at the end of August. Not included: NBA champion Isaiah Hartenstein.
The team will meet in Munich on Tuesday, July 29, before heading to Malaga for a week-long training camp and six test matches.
The big question was whether Isaiah Hartenstein (Oklahoma City Thunder) would be part of the squad, but this is not the case. The biggest surprise is probably the nomination of Christian Anderson, who won World Championship silver with the German U19 national team in July.
Three players are missing from the Olympic squad: Moritz Wagner, who is recovering from a cruciate ligament rupture. In addition, Niels Giffey has ended his career in the DBB jersey, and Nick Weiler-Babb, who moved from Bayern to Anadolu Efes in the summer, is also missing. It is striking that Weiler-Babb’s absence would have freed up a spot for a “naturalized” player, such as Dylan Osetkowski, but the big man from Partizan Belgrade did not receive an invitation.
New to the team is Tristan da Silva (Orlando Magic), one of three players from the NBA. The same applies to Dennis Schröder (Sacramento Kings) and Franz Wagner (Orlando Magic), who will lead the team. Mumbru still has to cut four players before the start of the European Championship, as only twelve players are allowed in a tournament.
