Ottke: “I could have been killed.”

The former boxing world champion was hit by a car while cycling in Mallorca.

According to his own account, former boxing world champion Sven Ottke was very lucky in his traffic accident in Mallorca.

“I could have been killed,” the 58-year-old said in an interview with Bild newspaper. He said he was “doing well under the circumstances” after the nasty crash.

Ottke describes the accident

Ottke was riding his bike on the Spanish holiday island when he was hit by a car.

“I wanted to turn left on a country road. You have to imagine the road as a T-junction. Then I was hit by the car. She completely overlooked me,” Ottke described the accident.

He never lost consciousness, “then everything happened very quickly. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Palma, where I also underwent surgery.”

Former boxer suffers multiple injuries

Ottke suffered “a double or even triple fracture of the tibia,” and his “shoulder was also injured, and the head of the shoulder is probably broken.”

The Berlin native hopes to be flown home “in two or three days.” “First I’ll go to Baden-Baden. Then on to Karlsruhe. I’ll probably have to be transported in a wheelchair.” Because he “can’t walk yet, of course, only sit for a while.”

The “Phantom” was a professional boxer from 1997 to 2004. Ottke won the IBF super middleweight world title in 1998 and also secured the WBA belt in 2003, successfully defending both titles until the end of his career. Ottke won all 34 of his professional fights, six of them by knockout.
