“The future of German basketball”: U-19 juniors win historic medal

The German U-19 national team won the silver medal at the World Championships in Lausanne. Although they suffered a clear defeat in the final against the USA, the association was still enthusiastic about their strong performance.

“That’s just outstanding! What a team! We are all incredibly proud of our team,” said DBB President Ingo Weiss about winning the silver medal. Although the German team lost 76-109 to the USA in the final, the DBB team knocked out some top-class opponents on their way to the final.

Within nine days, the Germans beat World Championship third-place finisher Slovenia, fifth-place finisher Canada, sixth-place finisher Australia, and European Championship runner-up Serbia, who finished the tournament in ninth place. “You can’t overstate how impressive that is. I’m very happy for everyone involved,” Weiss added.

After the final, playmaker Christian Anderson and big man Hannes Steinbach were also rewarded with places in the All-Tournament First Team of the World Championship. “We have seen the future of German men’s basketball here,” said Vice President Armin Andres with confidence.

U-19 team: Some soon to be in the senior team?

“We will see many of these players back in the senior squad soon. But first, it’s time to celebrate.” One candidate could be Steinbach, who told basketball-world.news before the tournament that the upcoming European Championships in the summer would be difficult for him to fit into his schedule.

The same applies to the other college players. A total of (at least) six of the twelve squad players will be playing at a US university in the coming season (Anderson, Janne Müller, Steinbach, Eric Reibe, Keenan Garner, Amon Dörries).
