Marc Marquez wins in Assen ahead of Marco Bezzecchi and Francesco Bagnaia – Alex Marquez breaks his hand in a crash after contact with Acosta
Marc Marquez (Ducati) triumphed at the legendary Dutch TT in Assen, claiming his sixth victory of the season. Marco Bezzecchi secured second place for Aprilia. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) finished third (see results). Alex Marquez (Gresini-Ducati) broke his left hand in a crash after colliding with Pedro Acosta (KTM).
109,000 fans had gathered in the “cathedral” of motorcycle racing. Bagnaia took the lead at the start of the 26-lap race. Behind him, Alex slotted in ahead of Marc Marquez. Pole-setter Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) initially followed in fourth.
At the start of the second lap, Marc overtook his brother in Turn 1, putting the two Ducati factory riders at the front. Bezzecchi had a strong start to the race. At the end of the second lap, the Aprilia rider overtook Alex Marquez to move into third place.
Bagnaia thus led ahead of Marc Marquez, Bezzecchi, Alex Marquez, Acosta, and Franco Morbidelli (VR46-Ducati). Alex Marquez failed to get going in the early stages, as he was also overtaken by Acosta and dropped back to fifth place.
At the end of the fifth lap, Marc Marquez launched a surprise attack in the Timmer chicane, braked past Bagnaia and took the lead. Behind him, Alex Marquez attacked Acosta on lap 6.
But at the exit of turn 5, there was a side-by-side contact between the two and Alex Marquez crashed. That was the end of the race for the World Championship runner-up. The race stewards ruled the incident a racing incident.
At the medical center, a fracture was diagnosed in his left hand, specifically a fracture of the second metacarpal bone. Alex Marquez left for Madrid on Sunday to undergo surgery.]

On the eighth lap, Bezzecchi snatched second place from Bagnaia in the Timmer chicane. Shortly afterwards, Bagnaia was also overtaken by Acosta and was now only fourth. Meanwhile, Bezzecchi closed in on Marc Marquez.
At the halfway point of the race, Marc Marquez increased the pace, but Bezzecchi was able to respond. Acosta was unable to do so and lost third place back to Bagnaia. The two-time MotoGP world champion closed in on Marc Marquez and Bezzecchi again and initially took Acosta with him.
Marc Marquez under pressure from Bezzecchi but error-free
Bezzecchi continued to put pressure on Marc Marquez, who received a warning for exceeding track limits. However, Marc Marquez had everything under control and kept the Aprilia at bay with a half-second lead. This meant there was no chance of an attack.

Marc Marquez celebrated his sixth win of the season and took the maximum 37 points with yesterday’s sprint victory. He also drew level with Giacomo Agostini in the all-time statistics. Both have won 68 races in the premier class.
“It was an incredible weekend, unexpected, because Assen isn’t usually one of my best tracks,” said the winner. “I’m sorry for Alex – my father just told me that he injured his finger.”
Bezzecchi: “Marc had a little bit more”
After his victory at Silverstone, Bezzecchi finished on the podium for the second time this season. “It was a fantastic race because Marc was extremely fast. I tried everything to stay with him,” said the Italian. “I wanted to attack, but he just had a little bit more.”
Bagnaia finished third: “To be honest, it was a bittersweet race. As always, I wanted to achieve more, but I had to fight again. Still, the pace wasn’t too bad. I tried to close the gap to the two leaders.

“Sometimes I got closer, but overall it was difficult. In the end, third place was again the maximum.” Acosta lost touch with the leading trio at the end. He finished fourth for the third time this season.
Maverick Vinales (Tech3-KTM) finished fifth. Fabio Di Giannantonio prevailed in the VR46 Ducati duel for sixth place. When he tried to overtake Morbidelli in the Timmer chicane, Morbidelli cut him off on the outside. He received a long-lap penalty for this.
Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse-Aprilia) finished eighth. Quartararo and Brad Binder (KTM) completed the top 10. They were followed by Johann Zarco (LCR-Honda), Alex Rins (Yamaha), Jack Miller (Pramac-Yamaha) and Somkiat Chantra (LCR-Honda).

Chantra scored his first World Championship point in 15th place. Aleix Espargaro (Honda) finished 16th and last. In the first lap, there was an accident at the back of the field between Miguel Oliveira (Pramac-Yamaha) and Ai Ogura (Trackhouse-Aprilia).
In lap seven, Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini-Ducati) crashed out on a highside. Quartararo was able to avoid him, but Joan Mir (Honda) was not so lucky and also crashed. Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) also retired after crashing out.
With this result, Marc Marquez’s lead in the World Championship over his brother grew to 68 points. Bagnaia is now 126 points behind (in the World Championship standings).
The action continues in Germany in two weeks. From July 11 to 13, MotoGP will be at the Sachsenring!
