Mural featuring Nico Williams damaged: Bilbao responds strongly

In Bilbao, a mural depicting Nico Williams, who is looking to leave the club, has been vandalized. The club felt compelled to issue a statement.

The mural in the Lutxana district of Barakaldo featured Nico Williams alongside his brother Inaki Williams and club legend Iker Muniain. Niko’s portrait was painted over and a message was added. Translated from Basque, it reads: “Whether you go or stay, you have lost our respect.”

Nico Williams, who still has a contract until 2027, is said to be on the verge of a move to FC Barcelona. As sporting director Deco revealed in an interview with La Vanguardia, an agreement has already been reached with the 22-year-old: “Both Nico and other players are showing a desire to come. If the circumstances are right, we will try.” The release clause for the Spanish striker is €58 million. Bayern Munich had also shown interest in the 2024 European champion.

Clear statement from Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao did not leave the act of vandalism uncommented and defended its player, especially since it was apparently not the only hostility directed at him. “The club understands that the current situation can cause some unrest among Athletic fans, especially when it is fueled by rumors, arrogance, or disregard for our identity,” the club said in a statement. “Respecting one of us means respecting Athletic itself. Those who removed his picture do not represent this club.”

Last season, Nico Williams made 45 competitive appearances for Bilbao, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists. The Basque club qualified for the Champions League in fourth place. Athletic reminded everyone that he is “one of us, a player who grew up in Lezama, is popular in the dressing room and supported by the fans.” Being an Athletic fan also means “keeping your cool. Defending Athletic means acting respectfully, not letting yourself be provoked, and remaining polite.”

A doubly pointless act

Incidentally, the angry fans’ “work” was in vain. Athletic announced that it had already contacted the artist who created the mural so that restoration work could begin as soon as possible. He will receive “all necessary assistance” from the club.
