Quietly and without fanfare, Formula 1 has extended its contract to host a Grand Prix in the gambling metropolis of Las Vegas until the end of 2027
Formula 1 will continue to race on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip in the coming years. The Grand Prix in the gambling metropolis has now been officially extended through 2027, with the clear intention of continuing the commitment in the long term. The pinnacle of motorsport will act as the direct organizer of the third US race on the calendar and is committed to the continued development of the Las Vegas experience.
Since its inaugural race in 2023, the Las Vegas Grand Prix has held a special place among the current 24 Grands Prix. Unlike in Miami or Austin, for example, the race is not organized by local promoters, but directly by Formula 1 itself. A ten-year commitment was already mentioned when the announcement was made. The race’s place on the calendar is therefore secure.
Unlike the recent announcement of the contract extension for Miami until 2041, no major public announcement was therefore necessary. Only the city itself could theoretically oppose the event. But the opposite seems to be the case.
The race takes place on one of the slower weekends of the year and has become a huge economic boon for hotels, casinos, and retailers. According to an official analysis of the economic impact, the 2024 race weekend generated revenues of US$934 million. With 306,000 visitors, 175,000 of whom came from outside the city, the event is now the largest annual event in Las Vegas.
“We have agreed on a two-year extension for 2026 and 2027,” said Emily Prazer, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Grand Prix and chief commercial officer of Formula 1. “Our goal is to continue to develop the event with the clear intention of establishing it for the long term. Of course, there were challenges initially, but we’re over the hump and want to make sure the race continues to work for both sides.”
Steve Hill, President of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, also emphasizes the value of the race: “November is usually the eighth-best month for Las Vegas, but thanks to the race, 2023 was the best month in the city’s history. We expect the race to stay here permanently and will continue to extend it step by step. Nothing else has this effect. No other event can replace it.”
Last year, Max Verstappen was crowned world champion in Las Vegas. The victory celebration in front of the Bellagio fountains symbolizes the special significance of the race, which also attracts considerable international attention to surrounding landmarks along the Strip.
