George Russell’s future at Mercedes remains unclear, with his contract expiring at the end of the season – he even understands the ongoing Verstappen rumors
“No, it’s not certain. Nothing is certain. But if I stay at Mercedes, next year will be my fifth year with the team.“ On his first day in Canada, the Brit was once again asked about his uncertain future – and responded accordingly: ”No real talks yet, to be honest,“ Russell revealed regarding the current status of contract negotiations with Mercedes. He gave the following reason: ”We have bigger concerns at the moment, namely making our car faster.”
However, the 27-year-old insists that he has no other concerns, namely about his future: “I know that I will be in Formula 1 next year,” Russell says confidently, making it clear that his current employer is his first port of call: “My goal and my intention is to stay at Mercedes, and I think that is also Toto’s clear intention.”
Despite Verstappen rumors: Russell has “no concerns”
Russell believes: “There’s honestly no real reason why either of us should leave.” Nevertheless, the Brit concedes with regard to the market: “It’s understandable that someone like Max is always on the radar – why wouldn’t he be? He’s one of the greatest of all time, and I understand that.”
Words that probably don’t come easily to Russell, considering the long-standing rivalry between the drivers and the recent events in Barcelona, where the two collided…
However, Russell believes that external competition has little impact on his negotiating position: “Ultimately, it’s up to you to prove your own worth. And I think I’ve done that time and time again in my seven years in Formula 1 – and throughout my entire career.”
That’s why the Briton once again emphasizes his commitment to the top flight: “So I have no concerns in that regard.”
