Chelsea pays millions to avoid signing Sancho

Where Jadon Sancho will play next season is still completely open. However, it is now clear that he has no future at Chelsea FC—his loan ended in an unusual way.

Jadon Sancho was right in the thick of things when Chelsea FC ended their season with a double triumph: on the final day of the Premier League, the player on loan from Manchester United was in the starting line-up that secured Champions League qualification with a 1-0 win in Nottingham. And he even scored as a substitute in the 4-1 Conference League final win over Real Betis.

But now it is clear that this will be Sancho’s last appearance for the Blues. As initially reported by The Athletic on Tuesday, the former Dortmund player’s one-year loan will end on June 30 because the two parties were unable to agree on a contract. This has curious consequences: in order to avoid the purchase obligation of up to €30 million, Chelsea will reportedly pay a contractually fixed “penalty” of around €6 million to ManUnited.

ManUnited strengthens its offense – but will Sancho play a role?

However, it is completely uncertain whether Sancho has a future with the Red Devils. Although their coach is no longer Erik ten Hag, with whom the 25-year-old winger had such a falling out that a loan move to BVB in January 2024 was almost inevitable, it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag’s successor Ruben Amorim has plans for Sancho, especially since Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton) is not expected to be the only new offensive signing. But it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag’s successor Ruben Amorim has plans for Sancho, especially since Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton) is unlikely to be the only new offensive signing. Among others, ManUnited is said to be very interested in Brentford’s 20-goal striker Bryan Mbeumo.

At Chelsea, Sancho was by no means a flop, but he was not a key player either. He made 12 of his 31 Premier League appearances as a substitute, scoring three goals and providing four assists. The fact that he regularly played in the Conference League, where he set up both goals in the 2-0 win in Heidenheim, shows that he was more of a second-string player for coach Enzo Maresca.

Sancho is only under contract with ManUnited until 2026, having signed a five-year deal when he moved from Dortmund to United for €85 million in 2021. It is therefore quite possible that the record champions will receive another million-dollar sum for Sancho from another club this summer.
