Europe’s 2025 championship map: The usual suspects and a record

Bayern Munich has reclaimed the Bundesliga title from Leverkusen. Several other teams have also been crowned champions – including one that set a new European record.

Leverkusen had an outstanding season last year and deservedly won the championship title undefeated. This naturally dented Bayern’s self-image – the Munich team had previously held first place eleven times in a row. The goal for this season was clear: FCB wanted to restore the balance in Germany.

And that’s exactly what Bayern did – on the 32nd matchday. Although the Munich team couldn’t secure the title on their own with a 3-3 draw in Leipzig, Harry Kane & Co. were able to celebrate on the couch the next day because Leverkusen only managed a 2-2 draw in Freiburg. So, on the 33rd matchday, after a 2-0 win over Gladbach, the trophy was ceremoniously handed over and returned to the serial champions.

Liverpool and PSG make it clear

But it wasn’t just Bayern who were able to celebrate the title. In England, Liverpool were crowned champions in their first year under Arne Slot, following Jürgen Klopp’s departure. In France, PSG were once again able to celebrate very early, with their star-studded squad once again putting the competition to the sword and leading the table by miles.

Things are tighter in Italy, where Napoli are in first place with two games to go, but only one point ahead of Inter. In Spain, the situation has been clear since El Clásico, with Barcelona beating rivals Real Madrid 4-3 and now seven points ahead of Los Blancos with three games to go. The title should therefore be a foregone conclusion for the Catalans.

Rasgrad sets record – Basel celebrates Shaqiri

There was also cause for celebration here and there in the “smaller” leagues outside the top 5 in Europe. Ludogorez Rasgrad, for example, secured the title in Bulgaria with five games to go before the end of the season. It was their 14th title in a row, one of only two such long winning streaks in Europe to date.

In Switzerland, FC Basel secured the title, relying on a very strong performance from Xherdan Shaqiri. In Scotland, it was once again a clear-cut affair, with Celtic winning their 55th championship title, their fourth in a row, by a large margin. And in Greece, too, the champion has long been decided. With four games remaining in the season, record champions Olympiacos Piraeus celebrated their 48th title.

Many close title decisions

Otherwise, the new champions are still being decided in one or two countries. And it could come down to a few heart-stopping finals. Because, in addition to Italy, the races are also extremely close in the Netherlands, Turkey, Portugal, and Austria, for example.
