Italy and Serbia in the Davis Cup semi-finals

Tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner have led their Davis Cup teams into the semi-finals. First, world number four Sinner secured his home country Italy a 2:1 win over the Netherlands with two victories in singles and doubles

Then Grand Slam record winner Djokovic secured Serbia’s decisive second point against Great Britain with a 6:4, 6:4 win over Cameron Norrie.

Italy and Serbia will play each other directly in the final round in Malaga on Saturday. Just last Sunday, Sinner and Djokovic had faced each other in the final at the ATP Finals – with the better ending for the Serb. Finland and Australia qualified for the first semi-final on Friday.

Sinner first tied the score at 1:1 against the Netherlands with a 7:6 (7:3), 6:1 win over Tallon Griekspoor. Shortly afterwards, the 22-year-old also stepped in for Simone Bolelli in the doubles, together with Lorenzo Sonego he beat Griekspoor/Wesley Koolhof 6:3, 6:4.

The German Davis Cup team missed out on the group stage of the traditional team competition after losing to Switzerland in the qualifying round at the beginning of February. Captain Michael Kohlmann’s team managed to advance in the relegation play-off with hosts Bosnia-Herzegovina.
