14 games, 14 losses: Hamburg misses out on surprise win in Romania

The last European tour takes the winless Towers to Romania. Although Hamburg wins two quarters against the favored hosts, it is not enough in the end.

Veolia Towers Hamburg will have to wait a little longer for their first Eurocup win this season. In their last away game, the bottom-of-the-table team lost 92-103 (39-50) to favorites U-BT Cluj-Napoca from Romania, suffering their 14th defeat in 14 games. The two clubs had already played each other three times in this competition before meeting again. Head coach Benka Barloschky’s team was clearly defeated three times. The best result from the perspective of the Basketball Bundesliga team was 76:95 in the first leg. In the fourth matchup, the difference was already 18 points after a few minutes, as Hamburg had no defensive control over the hosts and fell behind 5:23.

35 Towers points in the final quarter

In the second quarter, however, the Hanseatic team fought their way back to 34:37 against the Romanians, but then had to let Cluj pull away again. In addition, the Towers also failed to get off to a good start in the second half. Martin Breunig scored the first basket, but this was followed by a 10:0 run by Cluj. The Hamburg team went into the fourth quarter trailing 57:78. Once again, it looked like they were heading for a heavy defeat. But the Towers managed to score 35 points. In the end, however, this was not enough for a successful comeback.
