Alexander Zverev’s chances of climbing to the top of the world tennis rankings continue to improve: due to ongoing knee problems, Jannik Sinner, the current world number one from South Tyrol, has withdrawn from the ATP tournament in Beijing (starting 30 September). The Italian announced this on social media on Friday.
“My knee isn’t yet where I’d like it to be,” said Sinner in a video posted on X: “I’ll do everything I can to get back on court as soon as possible.” The five-time Grand Slam champion, who most recently triumphed in the final at Wimbledon in July against Zverev, has not played a single match on the tour since that grass-court final.
Sinner forced to pull out of Beijing due to knee problems
Meanwhile, Zverev has reduced the gap to 1,810 points thanks to his US Open triumph. Sinner will now lose another 500 points – he won the title in Beijing last year. Sinner also has plenty of points to defend in the coming months.
World number two Zverev is playing in the Laver Cup this weekend – and then intends to set his sights on becoming world number one.
