Zverev? “The Chance of a Lifetime”

If not now, then when? Boris Becker believes Alexander Zverev will triumph at Wimbledon.

Alexander Zverev has been unstoppable so far at the Wimbledon tournament at the All England Club—and if Boris Becker is to be believed, the door to the long-awaited title couldn’t be more wide open for the Hamburg native. “I think,” said the six-time Grand Slam champion on his podcast with Andrea Petkovic, “this is the chance of a lifetime to win Wimbledon.”

In Friday’s semifinal, Zverev will face British wild-card sensation Arthur Fery, who is aiming to secure the first home victory since Andy Murray’s win in 2016. “I’ve always been convinced: With that serve and that physique, this guy has to play well at Wimbledon—it’s just unbelievable,” said Becker, a three-time champion on Church Road. He added that this year there is “no reason” why Zverev shouldn’t come out on top in the end.

Becker: Former protégé as Zverev’s opponent?

Meanwhile, regarding defending champion Jannik Sinner—who could face Zverev in a potential final—Becker sees room for improvement ahead of Sinner’s semifinal against seven-time champion Novak Djokovic. “I think he’ll have to step up his game against Djokovic,” said Becker, who was full of praise for the 24-time Grand Slam winner: “I’m looking for new headlines to describe this man from Serbia.” After Djokovic’s quarterfinal victory—which lasted 5 hours and 15 minutes—against Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, Becker was “speechless.”

“I think Djokovic will make it to the final,” stated Becker, who had coached the veteran between 2013 and 2016: “But I think Sascha Zverev will win.”
