Zverev Supports “Teddy Bear” Struff

Jan-Lennard Struff is wowing fans with his performances at Wimbledon—including Alexander Zverev.

Jan-Lennard Struff is generating excitement with his strong performances at Wimbledon—and Alexander Zverev is also a big fan of the player from Warstein. “I love Struffi. Struffi is sensational,” gushed the French Open champion: “Whenever you think he’s about to quit tennis, there’s always a tournament like this where he secures his spot in the top 100 for the entire next year. That’s what happened last year at the U.S. Open, and it’s happening this year at Wimbledon.”

At Flushing Meadows, Struff was eliminated in the round of 16 by record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. At the grass-court classic in London, he’ll face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz on Sunday in the round of 16.

Zverev is happy for Struff

“That’s what I love about Struffi,” said Zverev: “He could lose in the first round 37 times in a row, and then all of a sudden he’s playing in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.” As a person, the 36-year-old is “a giant teddy bear. There isn’t a single bad bone in his body. I don’t even know how that’s possible.”

He’s “very, very happy” with how Struff is playing right now, Zverev said: “I’m very happy about the matches he’s won. I think he’s in fantastic form.”

And in that form, anything is possible against Hurkacz. “He can win that one, too. Then he’ll be in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career,” Zverev said: “And I’d be incredibly happy for him.”
