What Happened to the Special One? Mourinho Is More like the Miserable One These Days

Jose Mourinho sad

Mourinho once lit up football with charisma and a playful arrogance that the media and fans lapped up. After leading Porto to an unlikely Champions League trophy in 2004, Mourinho shot to the forefront of football news. His knee-slide celebration was played across the world and this young, talented manager had led Porto to triumph against the odds. From that moment, his managerial career spiralled even further, moving to Chelsea to light up the Premier League with his personality and managerial prowess.

Mourinho has enjoyed success at top clubs

A largely successful period at Chelsea further strengthened his reputation before he added Inter and Real Madrid to his managerial CV. He had become a household name across the world and had led some of the greatest football teams to victory. He had every reason to be gleeful and he was. The self-named ‘Special One’ loved to remind the press of his ability and how lucky they were to be in his presence. Opposition fans loved to hate him and most of them secretly wished that he could take over at their team.

That is exactly what happened at Manchester United. United fans had seen first-hand the Mourinho effect at Chelsea, being one of their main rivals in the Premier League. Mourinho had a swagger that was similar to that of Sir Alex Ferguson before he retired – a swagger that United dearly missed. Failed managers came and went, David Moyes was not up to the job and Van Gaal just could not take the team anywhere close to the Fergie era. The only man who seemed up to the job was Jose Mourinho, so United made their move to bring the Special One to Old Trafford.

Mourinho looks miserable most of the time

If United fans expected knee-sliding celebrations and a manager filled with a confident charisma then they were to be disappointed. Mourinho has barely cracked a smile the whole time he has been at United. His relationship with the media is painful to watch, as every interview and press conference contains a Mourinho moan. Rather than the bright personality he once was, he has become a grumpy old man before his time. If he is to get the best out of this Manchester United team and excite the fans, then he has to quit complaining and look excited about his team. The time is running out in terms of fans’ patience, so it is time for Mourinho to put on his happy face and lead Man-United back to the pinnacle of football.
