Pedro Leitao Brito, known as Bubista, is taking on a new role: The coach, who has led Cape Verde’s national team since 2020 and guided it to the Round of 32 at the World Cup, will now be on the sidelines for Morocco’s Renaissance de Berkane club.
Cape Verde’s World Cup qualification was already a sensation, but the island nation’s performance at the World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico topped even that. Under Coach Bubista’s guidance, Cape Verde wrote another success story after opening with a 0-0 draw against eventual world champion Spain: The underdog advanced, completely out of the blue, to the Round of 32, where their run came to an end in a dramatic match against Argentina after a 2–3 loss in extra time.
Bubista had been coaching Cape Verde since 2020
Bubista, who stepped down from his position as national team coach—a role he had held since 2020—after the tournament following a total of 67 games for unknown reasons, has now found a new challenge. As the Moroccan club Renaissance de Berkane announced on social media on Tuesday, the 56-year-old has signed a contract with the first-division club through 2028.
RS Berkane shared a video on Instagram that’s just under two minutes long with the caption “Welcome to Berkane, Bubista!” In the post, Bubista is first seen walking unrecognized through the streets of Morocco before arriving in Berkane to sign his contract.
