Jannik Vestergaard has announced the end of his football career. Following his departure from Leicester City in the summer, the former Bundesliga player lacks the motivation to take on a new challenge.
Jannik Vestergaard had worn the Leicester City shirt for five years before his contract expired at the end of June. The former Bundesliga professional experienced turbulent times with the Foxes and was no longer willing to go down to third-tier League One following their recent relegation. As a free agent, Vestergaard would nevertheless have had no shortage of suitors; according to his own statements, he had received offers from Germany and England. However, the 34-year-old no longer felt up to taking on a new challenge.
“I’m slowly starting to feel a certain weariness,” he told the Danish newspaper Politiken. “My motivation isn’t just waning – it’s actually gone completely. It feels right to call it a day now,” said Vestergaard, drawing a line under his football career.
Via Brøndby to the Bundesliga
His career began at smaller clubs in his hometown of Copenhagen, before he moved to the top Danish club Brøndby IF in 2008 at the age of 15. After just two years, Vestergaard moved on to Germany and ended up at Hoffenheim, not yet even of legal age. He made his Bundesliga debut for TSG in April 2011. Over the following four years, he made a further 70 league appearances before Vestergaard received a call from Bremen at the start of 2015.
The 1.99-metre giant was under contract at Werder for just one and a half years, before Gladbach – the third and final Bundesliga club in Vestergaard’s career – came calling. It was with the Foals that he also made his international debut. His debut for the senior national team came much earlier: in August 2013, Vestergaard took to the pitch for Denmark for the first time in a friendly against Poland (2–3). In total, he made 59 international appearances (scoring three goals) – including ten at European Championships – the last of which came in November last year.
After a total of 185 appearances and 14 goals in the Bundesliga, Vestergaard decided in the summer of 2018 to move to England to join Southampton FC. At the time, his transfer fee of 23 million euros made him the second most expensive signing in Gladbach’s club history. Including his time at Leicester, the physically strong defender made exactly 100 appearances (four goals) in the world’s toughest league.
The only thing Vestergaard failed to win at any of his clubs was a major title. Still, with his last club, he won the Championship – the second tier – in 2024.
