Joan Mir suffered a finger injury in the crash at the start of the Le Mans race – but he will still be riding at Silverstone this weekend
Several riders were involved in the crash at the start of the Le Mans race. Enea Bastianini (KTM) rode over the kerb on the inside of the Dunlop chicane and collided with Francesco Bagnaia’s Ducati. (Bastianini received a long-lap penalty for Silverstone.) Joan Mir tried to avoid the crash and straightened up his Honda. In doing so, he made contact with his teammate Johann Zarco.
Zarco was able to drive straight through the gravel trap and continue the race. The Frenchman ultimately triumphed in his home race. Mir also crashed in the situation and was taken to the medical center.
He was then taken to a hospital for further examination. The Honda team reported on race Sunday that Mir had suffered a fracture to his right hand and was also complaining of neck pain.
The team said it would provide further updates in the following days. However, there has been radio silence since then. In the preview for the British Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend at Silverstone, it is stated that Mir will start as planned.
Honda has only said that Mir has been focusing on his preparation with his physiotherapist since the crash. “Everything looks good so far,” Mir is quoted as saying in the press release. The injury is not thought to be serious.
“There is a small injury to the tip of my finger, but I was able to continue my training as usual for the most part,” the Spaniard continued. “I’ve been working a lot with my physiotherapist on my neck, and we’ve made progress there too.“
”The plan and the starting position for the weekend remain unchanged. We showed in Le Mans that we are fast. Now we just need a little luck and have to get back into Q2 to avoid problems in the first few laps. Let’s do it!”
The Honda factory team will once again be reinforced by the test team at Silverstone. A wildcard has been registered for the third time in a row. Aleix Espargaro was at the start in Jerez and Takaaki Nakagami in Le Mans. Now it’s Espargaro again, who won at Silverstone in 2023.
