The Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) in Cologne are among the most prestigious events on the Counter-Strike scene. In 2026, the CS pillar will therefore receive a special honor – for the first time in ten years.
It doesn’t get any better than this: Majors are the ultimate in the world of Counter-Strike eSports. Not only are the major tournaments directly supported by developer Valve, but there is also considerable prestige and prize money at stake. The prize pool currently stands at $1.25 million, which the 32 best teams in the world will compete for in the Majors starting this year.
In 2026, such a tournament is set to take place in Cologne for the first time since 2016. This was announced by the ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) during the award ceremony of the annual Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) in the cathedral city. The event has been a must-see date in the eSports calendar of the tactical shooter for years – and is now being rewarded for it.
“The IEM Cologne has established itself as one of the most important pillars in professional Counter-Strike competition. Every year, it brings together the best international teams with the most passionate fans on site and the celebrating eSports community around the world in the unique, electrifying atmosphere of the LANXESS arena,” said Marc Winther, praising the Masters.
For the Director of Game Ecosystems at Counter-Strike, the decision on the venue for next year’s Major is only logical: “Bringing the Major back to Cologne after ten years underscores the global significance of IEM Cologne,” said Winther, who is looking forward to “making next year’s championship unforgettable.” It will be the first Major on German soil since 2019, when Berlin was awarded the contract.
Team Spirit wins in front of a sold-out crowd
Cologne once again demonstrated that it is more than ready to host a Major this weekend. According to the organizers, 41,000 visitors flocked to the LANXESS arena to watch the IEM live on site – it was sold out. In addition, over a million viewers watched online via official livestreams.
The sporting winner of the event was Team Spirit, which won the final 3-0 against MOUZ. The eventual runners-up had previously pulled off a surprise victory against defending champions Vitality. This was one of many memorable stories that have unfolded in the “Cathedral of Counter-Strike” so far. More are set to follow in 2026 – this time at major level.
