Tunisian Jabeur underpins role as favourite

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, the world number two, has reached the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Grand Slam.

The 27-year-old winner of the preparatory tournament in Berlin beat Angelique Kerber’s vanquisher, Elise Mertens of Belgium, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4. Jabeur is one of the big favourites for the title, and not only because top seed Iga Swiatek of Poland has dropped out of the tournament.

The 27-year-old will now face the four-year-younger Czech Marie Bouzkova, who surprisingly has reached a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time in her tennis career, in the round of the best eight. Bouzkova won against Caroline Garcia of France 7:5, 6:2. The winner of the match between Jabeur and Bouzkova will face Jule Niemeier or Tatjana Maria in the German duel.
