Maro Engel wins the DTM finale at Hockenheim at the age of 41: a look at the statistics reveals whether the AMG driver ranks among the oldest winners in history
Although Winward-Mercedes driver Maro Engel missed out on his first DTM title this year, he still put in a strong season with three victories: he won the season opener at the Red Bull Ring, was retrospectively awarded the victory at Oschersleben, and also triumphed at the season finale in Hockenheim.
This means that Engel, who previously had only two victories to his name – from 2017 and 2023 – now joins an exclusive group of just 13 drivers who have managed to win a DTM race whilst aged over 40. The AMG driver was exactly 41 years, one month and 14 days old at the time of his latest triumph at Hockenheim.
However, this is not enough to secure a place in the top 10 of the oldest DTM race winners. The Winward-Mercedes driver currently occupies eleventh place in this ranking. Among the older winners is Formula 1 World Champion Keke Rosberg, who celebrated his last DTM victory in Wunstorf in 1992 at the age of 43 years, four months and 27 days.
DTM veterans Tom Kristensen, Bernd Schneider and Hans-Joachim Stuck were also able to triumph once again at an advanced age, as were Walter Röhrl and DTM legend Klaus Ludwig. They, too, belong to the exclusive circle of drivers who have gone down in the series’ history books with an ‘over-40s race win’.
Engel could make the top 10 of the oldest DTM winners
However, Maro Engel could break into the top 10 in the 2027 season: should the AMG driver continue his DTM career next season – as expected – and secure his sixth career victory, he could make it into the top ten oldest DTM race winners.
However, the 41-year-old would need to achieve this in the second half of the season, i.e. from the DTM race at Zandvoort onwards. With a win at the Sachsenring or in the season finale at Hockenheim, Engel could move up to ninth place.
To climb even higher up the rankings, this year’s DTM runner-up would need to continue racing.
