Trippier debut: Newcastle embarrassed against Cambridge

Debut sensationally unsuccessful: Kieran Trippier lost his first game for Newcastle United. The nouveau riche English side surprisingly lost 1-0 to third division side Cambridge United in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

This is probably not how he had imagined his first game: Kieran Trippier, the first transfer of the new Saudi Arabian owners at Newcastle United, suffered an embarrassing defeat on his debut for the Magpies. The favourites, who by the way fielded the best possible line-up, looked to be in a clear position early on against third division side Cambridge.

Newcastle were in control of the game for long periods – and had chances. But like Saint-Maximin (25th), Murphy (40th, 45th) either failed to hit Cambridge’s goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov or the crossbar. That was to take its revenge: After a shaky clearance by the Magpies defence, Joe Ironside scored from a turn to give the 16th-placed League One side the lead (56th).

Newcastle then threw everything they had at the home crowd in an attempt to avoid the impending exit. But again Mitov was on the spot with an outstanding save from Joelinton’s header (90th). So it remained a surprising victory for the underdogs, who entered the 4th round of the FA Cup – while Newcastle, even with Trippier, who played through, could not avert the bitter elimination.
