Following a disappointing season for Newcastle United, star midfielder Sandro Tonali had recently become the subject of transfer rumors—and, as widely expected, has now ended up in London. At Tottenham.
As a rising star for both AC Milan and the Italian national team, Sandro Tonali decided in the summer of 2023 to leave his beloved club and join the Premier League. Following his 70-million-euro move to Newcastle United at the time, he has now, as expected, made another transfer within the English top flight. As had been speculated recently, Tonali has opted to join Tottenham Hotspur.
What at first glance looks like a deal between a disappointing club (the Magpies finished 12th last season and thus missed out on European competition) and an equally disappointing club (the Spurs narrowly avoided relegation to the second division in the final stretch) makes sense upon closer inspection.
Spurs Aim for Great Things
After all, Roberto de Zerbi has only been at the helm of the London club since March of this year—and now that he’s completed his short-term mission of keeping the team in the league, he’s aiming high. Tottenham’s goal from now on is to once again compete among the elite, at the very least for a spot in European competition. To do so, they need fresh star players like his compatriot Tonali, for whom the Spurs are willing to pay a hefty price.
According to reports, more than 100 million euros (over 80 million British pounds) are being spent, which is said to match the asking price set by Newcastle United. That would also set a new club record, previously held by recent signing Mateus Fernandes.
Tonali: “It was magical”
While the club did not disclose any contract details, media reports suggest it is a six-year deal running through June 30, 2032. He is also said to be earning over 15 million euros (13 million British pounds) per season, with bonus payments on top of that.
“I spent almost two hours talking with the head coach about the club, the fans, the stadium, and our style of play,” Tonali said, excited about the new challenge. “It was magical because I knew right away that I had to sign with Tottenham. I’ve played against Tottenham a few times before and always experienced a great atmosphere created by the fantastic fans. I can’t wait for the season to finally start.”
The midfielder, who at 26 is still young and is expected to be a key player for the future Squadra Azzurra (32 international appearances), has made 79 Premier League appearances (five goals) to date, along with 32 Champions League appearances (one goal), and brings a wealth of experience from an impressive 130 Serie A appearances for Milan and Brescia.
