Tiafack triumphs – and says sorry

The Cologne native gives his Polish opponent no chance – and apologizes to the audience for the “short work.”

Cologne boxer Nelvie Tiafack, bronze medalist at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, made a perfect debut in his first professional fight. The 26-year-old won against Poland’s Jakub Sosinski by technical knockout in the second round on Saturday evening in Heidelberg.

“I hope I was able to entertain you a little. In boxing, you don’t get paid for overtime,” Tiafack said into the hall microphone, adding, “I think the professional thing is just right for me.”

His opponent was clearly outclassed from the start of the second round at the latest. After a series of punches from Tiafack, the referee stopped the fight. It was Sosinski’s twelfth defeat in his 21st professional fight. “You have to remember Tiafack’s name, he’s going to have a great future,” predicted former world champion Arthur Abraham afterwards.

Ahead of his professional debut, Tiafack told the Sport-Informations-Dienst (SID): “It’s a dream come true. I’m just really excited.” For Tiafack, who was born in Cameroon, it was his first fight since the Olympics in Paris, where he became the first German boxer to win an Olympic medal in the super heavyweight division (over 92 kg) with a bronze. Even before the Games, he had announced his intention to compete professionally in the future.

Tiafack’s debut took place at the first Ringside Zone event at the SNP Dome in Heidelberg. Tiafack had originally announced his intention to pursue his professional career abroad. However, in a recent interview with SID, he no longer ruled out a commitment in Germany – provided he was offered well-attended events and top international opponents. Tiafack has not yet signed a professional contract.
