Eva Lys impresses at the start and end of the match against 17-year-old Iva Jovic.
Eva Lys is the first German tennis player to reach the third round of the highly competitive WTA tournament in Beijing. The 23-year-old from Hamburg defeated the young American Iva Jovic (17) 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 after an energetic performance. Now waiting in the third round is former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) or Caty McNally from the USA.
Laura Siegemund and Tatjana Maria have already been eliminated in the Chinese capital.
The only German player still in the tournament is rising star Ella Seidel. The Hamburg native, who is in great form, will face 23rd-seeded Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in her second-round match.=
Lys battles through despite several double faults
Lys had had significantly fewer problems in the first round against her Chinese opponent, Zhang Ruien, ranked 836 in the world, losing only one game in the entire match.
She started well against the seeded Jovic, but allowed herself too many double faults, among other things, as the match progressed.
In the end, the 23-year-old played her best tennis again, securing two late breaks and marching to victory.
