Roberto Carlos had originally gone to a hospital in Sao Paulo for an examination of his leg. However, after a blood clot was discovered, his visit led to emergency heart surgery.
This was probably not how Roberto Carlos had imagined his visit to a hospital in Brazil’s metropolis of Sao Paolo. According to Spanish media reports, the former world-class defender, who is currently on vacation in his home country, had gone to the hospital for a medical examination of his leg. But there, the 52-year-old received a nasty surprise when the doctors treating him discovered that the former Real Madrid professional’s heart pumping capacity was extremely reduced.
Three-hour operation
After the doctors discovered a blood clot, they decided to perform emergency surgery. Following a three-hour operation, Marca reports, citing sources close to the 2002 World Cup winner, that Brazil’s soccer legend is now on the road to recovery.
Roberto Carlos: “I’m fine”
Roberto Carlos himself is reported to have told AS: “I’m fine now and I’m being closely monitored.” The 127-time international is to remain in hospital for two more days for observation.
Roberto Carlos played in 527 competitive matches for Real Madrid between 1996 and 2007. The technically brilliant left-footed player won four Spanish league titles and three Champions League titles with Los Blancos. Today, he is active as a brand ambassador for the club.
