Tenth triumph in eleven years: PSG lift Super Cup against Toulouse

Paris St. Germain have underlined their status as record French Super Cup winners. The capital club won their 12th title against FC Toulouse – their tenth in the last eleven years

The expectations ahead of the Super Cup final in France were clear. Paris St. Germain, champions going into the clash at home in the Parc des Princes, were the favorites against the surprising cup winners Toulouse – and lived up to this role after just three minutes: Dembelé found Lee, who had no problems putting the star ensemble from the Seine into the lead (3rd). One of Luis Enrique’s changes to the starting eleven, which included Hakimi and Hernandez alongside the former Dortmund player after the 3-1 win against FC Metz, paid off early on.

Paris’ proliferation of chances after taking an early lead

A one-sided first half ensued, in which PSG dominated the game and, after Suazo missed a chance to equalize out of nothing (19th), set off a veritable firework display. Mbappé (28), Barcola (32) and Hakimi (34) created the three clearest opportunities in the space of a few minutes for the Parisians, who were overwhelmingly superior but initially failed to extend their lead.

Donnarumma saves, Mbappé follows up

Instead, Luis Enrique’s men were once again forced to fear for their narrow lead after just under 40 minutes when Dallinga was played clear and his powerful finish was turned onto the post by Donnarumma (38′). An exclamation mark from the underdogs, but one that fizzled out before the end of the first half. Shortly before the break, Barcola set up Mbappé, who passed two opponents and gave Restes in the South of France box no chance (44′).

After the restart, however, Les Violets showed that they had not yet given up. Casseres (48′) and Dallinga (49′) had good chances early on, but missed Donnarumma’s goal. It was even closer a little later with Sierro’s 64th-minute goal. Donnarumma had allowed a shot from Dünnum to bounce forward and Marquinhos had just been able to block decisively

Toulouse knock – Hakimi hits the post

Paris took some of the tempo out of the game. Although there were a few decent moves into the opponent’s penalty area, there was a lack of consistency. It was Hakimi who hit a free-kick past the wall and Restes, who had no chance, against the post and missed the final decision (64′), as did Asensio, who was denied by Diarra and Restes (74′).

However, that did little to change the outcome of the game, as did two final TFC goals from Dallinga (90.+2) and Casseres (90.+3) deep into stoppage time. Paris St. Germain won the French Super Cup for the tenth time in the last eleven years. It was the 12th title of this kind for the capital club, who underlined their position as record winners.

The French league has a break this weekend because the cup is on the agenda. PSG are at Revel (Sunday, 20:45), Toulouse at SO Chambery (Sunday, 17:30).
