Surprise in Melbourne: Tsitsipas already out

The Greek, ranked 11th in the world, surprisingly loses in four sets – and fails in the first round.

First big surprise at the Australian Open: Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas has already failed at his opening hurdle in Melbourne. The world number eleven, who reached the 2023 Australian Open final, lost 5-7, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6 to American Alex Michelsen, who is ranked 42nd in the world.

Tsitsipas is the first player in the extended world top 20 to be knocked out of the tournament. The last time the two-time Grand Slam finalist, who, despite a Masters title, had lost a little ground to the top in Monte Carlo in 2024, was knocked out in the first round of Melbourne in 2018 – as a then 19-year-old.
