Last year’s finalist wins in two sets against Flavio Cobolli, who knocked out defending champion Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals
Last year’s finalist Ben Shelton from the USA won the ATP tournament in Munich after defending champion Alexander Zverev was knocked out in the semi-finals. In the final, the 23-year-old world number five defeated Flavio Cobolli 6:2, 7:5. The Italian had convincingly eliminated the German number one in the semi-finals (6:3, 6:3).
For the fifth tournament win of his career, the number two seed Shelton, who had lost the final to Zverev in two sets last year, received prize money of 478,935 euros and, as usual, a new car from the tournament sponsor. Cobolli, number 16 in the world rankings and last year’s winner in Hamburg, was left with 257,705 euros.
Shelton’s victory is the most valuable by an American on clay since 2002, when Andre Agassi won the Masters in Rome. The tournament in Munich has belonged to the 500 category since last year.
