Race Halted in Hungary After Severe Moto3 Crash – Several Riders Involved in Crash – Munoz Taken to Hospital with Injuries
A serious crash occurred during the Moto3 race at the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park. On the final lap, several riders in a large group were battling for third place.
This group included David Munoz (IntactGP-KTM), Brian Uriarte (Ajo-KTM), Alvaro Carpe (Ajo-KTM), Rico Salmela (Tech3-KTM), and Valentin Perrone (Tech3-KTM). In Turn 11, Carpe overtook Munoz, and they accelerated onto the back straight.
As they accelerated out of the turn, Munoz hit Carpe’s rear wheel and crashed. Uriarte, who was right behind them, was unable to react, collided with Munoz’s motorcycle, and crashed as well.
Salmela was able to swerve to the right and narrowly avoid the crash, but Perrone’s front tire struck Munoz, who was sliding across the track. In the collision, Perrone rolled spectacularly forward, headfirst.
The race was immediately stopped. After a few minutes, race officials reported that all riders were conscious. Perrone and Salmela were able to ride back to the pits under their own power. Munoz was taken to the Medical Center.
The 20-year-old sustained injuries, as the IntactGP team reported. Munoz had only recently fully recovered from a serious leg injury he sustained last October.
After receiving initial treatment at the Medical Center, the Spaniard was subsequently flown to a hospital in Budapest. There, fractures in his left pelvic area were diagnosed, which are currently being treated surgically.
“Unfortunately, David had to be taken to a hospital in Budapest with injuries,” said team manager Peter Öttl. “We wish him all the best, hope for a speedy recovery, and look forward to his return to our team soon.”
Due to the race being stopped, the results were determined based on the standings after 19 of 20 laps. Maximo Quiles (Aspar-KTM) claimed his fifth win of the season and extended his lead in the World Championship.
David Almansa, Muñoz’s IntactGP teammate, finished second. Carpe took third place on the podium. Uriarte and Salmela finished fourth and fifth. Muñoz and Perrone were classified as retired. Austrian rider Leo Rammerstorfer (SIC58-Honda) finished 19th and did not score any World Championship points.
