Ella Seidel survives qualifying for Wimbledon. However, the number of German tennis pros participating in the classic grass court tournament is lower than it has been for a long time.
Ella Seidel is the only German tennis pro to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon. The 20-year-old defeated Croatia’s Jana Fett 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. After three wins, she is now in the first round of the grass court classic for the first time. Seidel had previously defeated former quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier.
Lowest number of Germans at Wimbledon since 1982
This means that only seven German professionals will be competing in the singles at the Grand Slam tournament before the draw on Friday (11:00 a.m. CEST). The last time there were so few at Wimbledon was 43 years ago (6).
World number three Alexander Zverev has the best chances starting on Monday, even though he has never made it past the round of 16 at Wimbledon. Daniel Altmaier and Jan-Lennard Struff are also still in the men’s draw, while Eva Lys, Tatjana Maria and Laura Siegemund are still in the women’s draw alongside Seidel.
