Robin Gosens’ departure from Florence appears to be on the horizon. Fiorentina is leaving the German out of its preseason roster, though he’s also on the radar of his dream club.
Fiorentina fans searched in vain for Robin Gosens’ name on Sunday—both among the 29 fit players and under the “individual training” note—when the club announced the roster for the upcoming preseason on Instagram. Just the day before, the 32-year-old had completed an individual training session at Viola Park, AC Florence’s state-of-the-art training center—separate from the group, which will now prepare for the upcoming season without him.
After two years in the Tuscan capital, Gosens’ departure appears imminent. Under the corresponding AC Florence post, numerous fan comments such as “I’m so sorry” or “We want Robin Gosens” can be read. Some fans are even urging sporting director Fabio Paratici to reconsider the German’s future.
Will he make the move to his dream club?
However, that is highly unlikely to happen—Gosens’ absence from the preseason roster can be seen as a clear sign that the defender should start looking for a new club. This, in turn, brings FC Schalke 04 into the picture, as the club had already previously expressed interest in the former national team player.
In the past, Gosens had repeatedly and publicly toyed with the idea of a move to his favorite club. “That’s still nothing more than a thought experiment for sometime in the future. Schalke was the club that got me into soccer,” A transfer to the Royal Blues nearly happened back in 2019, but Atalanta Bergamo—Gosens’ club at the time—ultimately put a stop to it.
Grosso plans without Gosens
Via Inter Milan and Union Berlin, Gosens initially arrived in Florence on loan and eventually on a permanent basis. Over two seasons, he appeared in 77 competitive matches for Fiorentina, scoring 12 goals and directly setting up 13 more.
Meanwhile, even the left-back couldn’t prevent AC from having to fight against relegation from Serie A almost until the very end of the past season. After a disappointing 15th-place finish, Florence is hoping for a significantly better showing in 2026/27 under new coach Fabio Grosso. Gosens will most likely have no influence on that.
