At the WTA tournament, the Greek player lost the final to Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic).
Like mother, like daughter: Tennis player Maria Sakkari narrowly missed a home victory at the WTA tournament in Athens.
In the final of the hard-court tournament, the Greek player lost to former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 6-7 (5-7), 3-6.
Sakkari’s mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, had also reached the final in Athens in 1986, but lost in two sets on clay to Sylvia Hanika of Munich.
Greece’s capital had not hosted a tournament since 1991; this year, Athens is replacing the event in Jiujiang, China.
