Antonio Rüdiger’s contract with Real Madrid expires at the end of the season; negotiations for an extension had been underway—and they have now apparently been successfully concluded. The 33-year-old is expected to sign on for another year.
For months, rumors have swirled around Antonio Rüdiger, whose future was uncertain. But now AS reports that the German national team defender and Real Madrid have agreed to extend his contract for another year—until June 2027.
Most recently, it was reported that Rüdiger wanted a two-year contract but had been rebuffed with this demand. As is well known, Real Madrid follows a strict policy whereby players over the age of 30 generally receive only one-year contracts.
According to the report, Rüdiger is also said to have turned down a significantly more lucrative financial offer from Saudi Arabia in order to remain with Los Blancos—and was otherwise willing to make concessions. It is no secret that he feels at home with the Royals.
Royal Defensive Leader
The center back has been playing for the Royals since 2022 and has now made 164 appearances. Lately, however, he hasn’t had it easy. This season, he has only played in 18 league games, partly because knee problems forced him to take a break. But the veteran has been back since January and has once again established himself as the Royals’ defensive leader.
Since his return, he has managed to stabilize Real’s defense—at least at times—and has helped guide young, inexperienced players like Raúl Asensio, Álvaro Carreras, and Dean Huijsen. In the locker room, “El Loco,” as Rüdiger is affectionately known in Madrid, is considered a leader. On the field, he certainly is, not least because of his tough playing style and his commitment—his statement has since become famous: “If I have to, I’ll play for Real Madrid on one leg.”
By extending Rüdiger’s contract, Real would also provide some relief in defense. There is a great need for action there, following the announcement of captain Dani Carvajal’s departure and the fact that the injury-plagued David Alaba likely has no future there either.
And Rüdiger should also be able to sleep more soundly, as the extension allows him to put his professional future to rest and focus fully on the upcoming World Cup.
