Reaction to the false start: Chelsea sacks coach Tuchel

Chelsea FC have reacted to their false start to the new season by sacking their once successful coach Thomas Tuchel after just over a year and a half in charge.

The 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League opener on Tuesday night was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back at Chelsea FC. On Wednesday morning, the Blues announced that they had relieved coach Thomas Tuchel of his duties – after his 100th competitive game for CFC.

At the end of January 2021, Tuchel had succeeded club legend Frank Lampard on Chelsea’s touchline and in just a few months had transformed the struggling club into a top European team – which had already won the Champions League final against Manchester City at the end of May.

The Club World Cup also followed and initially a lot of euphoria, which has pretty much faded away in the past months. Initially, the Blues’ hands were tied financially due to sanctions against former owner Roman Abramovich, but his successor Todd Boehly has costly improved Tuchel’s squad. Now the former Mainz and Dortmund player, whose time at Stamford Bridge is coming to an end after a good year and a half, could do nothing with that.
