FIFA has published a new ranking list for the 2029 Club World Cup. Three German clubs make it into the top 10.
The 2029 Club World Cup is already casting its shadow. Even if it is not yet clear where and with how many participants the tournament will take place in three years’ time. The world governing body FIFA has already published the official ranking for the Club World Cup. It is a kind of “live table” that shows which teams can qualify for the next global club tournament via the ranking route.
Three German clubs are currently in the top 10 of this ranking: FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The German champions from Munich are currently in third place with 92 points behind leaders Arsenal (103) and CL semi-final opponents Paris Saint-Germain (97). Dortmund are ninth (58) and Leverkusen are 10th (57). The top 10 is completed by FC Barcelona (4th, 92), Liverpool (5th, 78), Inter Milan (6th, 76), Real Madrid (7th, 75) and Atletico Madrid (8th, 74).
The ranking is based on the performance of the clubs in the respective major continental club competitions in the qualifying period from 2025 to 2028. Wins, draws and reaching further stages of the tournament are assessed. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and three points for progressing to the next round.
Five clubs already in for sure
Paris Saint-Germain (last year’s CL winners), Al-Ahli (Saudi Arabia), Pyramids (Egypt), Flamengo (Brazil) and Cruz Azul (Mexico) have already qualified for the next Club World Cup as continental champions. If FC Bayern win the Champions League this year, they will also qualify directly for the 2029 tournament.
At the first edition of the Club World Cup in the new format, Bayern and Dortmund both reached the quarter-finals and were among the top eight clubs in the world. However, Munich then fell to PSG (0:2), while Dortmund were beaten by Real Madrid (2:3). In the end, however, Chelsea FC won the title in the USA.
