In Canada, weather conditions are once again affecting the schedule.
The quarterfinals at the ATP Masters in Montreal are starting late. Due to rain and a potential risk of lightning near the venue, the first two matches of the quarterfinals have been rescheduled from Monday to Tuesday (local time). As a result, all four quarterfinal matches are now set to be played on a single day.
Once again, weather conditions have disrupted the 1000-level event, which has come under criticism for its 12-day duration. The tournament is not scheduled to end until Thursday, which means it will overlap with the start of the Cincinnati Masters, the dress rehearsal for the U.S. Open, which begins on August 30.
French Open champion Alexander Zverev was eliminated in the first round by Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor, while his compatriot Yannick Hanfmann lost in the third round to Portugal’s Nuno Borges. The quarterfinals will feature, among others, a matchup between Spanish teenager Rafael Jódar and Arthur Fils of France, as well as a match between defending champion Ben Shelton of the United States and Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic. Zverev had defeated Mensik in the semifinals on his way to his first Grand Slam title.
