At the Miami Grand Prix, Alpine driver Pierre Gasly rolled over spectacularly after a collision with Liam Lawson
At the Miami Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly rolled over during a duel with Liam Lawson: “Right now, I’m just disappointed,” the Frenchman told Sky. “Of course, it was pretty scary. When you’re in the air, you don’t really know what’s happening. So it was a bit scary for me.”
“Luckily, I’m okay,” Gasly emphasized. “It’s the disappointment that hurts more than anything else.”
In Turn 17, the Alpine driver had tried to squeeze past Lawson on the outside. Although the one-time Grand Prix winner managed to briefly position himself ahead of the Racing Bull driver, the latter drove into his side at the corner entry, causing Gasly’s Alpine to roll over. After four laps, the race was already over for the Frenchman.
Was it Lawson’s fault?
“I braked later, was slightly ahead of him, and left him enough room on the inside so we could both make the corner,” explains Gasly. At the time of the interview, the 30-year-old hadn’t yet had much time to analyze the situation in depth:
“I haven’t seen the TV footage yet, so I don’t know if he braked too hard or misjudged the situation. In any case, he touched me and the next second I was upside down.”
After the race, Lawson had the following thoughts on the collision: “I went into the last corner and when I braked, I lost the gearbox and ended up in neutral. I had no gears left and couldn’t stop. I’ve never had anything like that happen before.“
Setting aside the technical details of the collision, Gasly emphasizes: ”That was really unpleasant in the car, and I think it could have been prevented. It’s just frustrating.”
According to their own accounts, both had gotten off to a really good start. Gasly had to swerve to avoid Verstappen, who was spinning, causing the Alpine driver to lose numerous positions:
“Unfortunate timing,” as Gasly sums it up. “But I wasn’t too worried. We had the pace yesterday, so I knew we should be able to get back into the top 10. Then this scary incident happened.”
Overall, Lawson admits: “We didn’t have the pace this weekend, but we did have a good start. The first lap was really good; we made up a lot of positions and were in the top 10.”
“I struggled with the balance at the start of the race, which is why I defended myself like that. It’s really frustrating and disappointing that a technical issue took us out of the race. Just bad luck.”
Rollovers of this kind are quite rare in modern Formula 1. Most recently, Yuki Tsunoda provided such scenes at Imola in 2025 when his Red Bull ended up upside down in the tire barrier. Alexander Wurz, Esteban Gutierrez, and Felipe Massa have also found themselves in such precarious situations.
The entire weekend had already been anything but satisfactory for Gasly. After all, the Alpine driver finished behind his teammate Franco Colapinto in qualifying. Colapinto was able to recharge his batteries last week with a spectacular performance in Argentina.
