Perez on Mbappé statement: “My words were misinterpreted”

Kylian Mbappé had recently spoken about his desire to move to Real Madrid. Shortly afterwards, President Florentino Perez made a statement about the personnel matter – only to row back just hours later.

Mbappé had spoken to RMC Sports and L’Equipe about the past transfer period, among other things. He had already declared in July that he wanted to leave PSG and also clarified: “If I had left in the summer, I would have only gone to Real Madrid.”

Real president Perez then stated in the newspaper “El Debate”: “There will be news about Mbappé in January. We hope that on January 1 everything can be resolved.” Mbappé’s contract expires on June 30, 2022, and the Frenchman is allowed to negotiate with any team six months before it expires without having to account to PSG.

So, a transfer announcement? That’s not how Perez wanted it to be understood, only a little later he rowed back again. On “RMC Sport” he said: “My words were misinterpreted. What I said is that we have to wait until next year to hear from you, always with due respect for PSG, with whom we have good relations.”

The France international had been courted by Perez and Real in the summer, but the Madrilenians had rebuffed PSG with a €180m offer.
