The Real Madrid chapter has not been a favorable one for Trent Alexander-Arnold so far. Now the Englishman is also expected to be out for two months.
Real Madrid has been struggling in the last quarter of the calendar year. After three consecutive league draws, the Royals finally secured a victory on Wednesday evening. However, Real paid dearly for their 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao. As the Blancos announced the following day, summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold has suffered a serious injury.
The Liverpool native, who started at right back in Real’s back four, twisted his ankle in the 55th minute. He then lay on the ground and quickly signaled that he could not continue. Raul Asencio replaced the 34-time England international.
Examinations on Thursday revealed no foot or ankle injury, but rather “a muscle injury in the front quadriceps of his left leg.” Alexander-Arnold had repeatedly struggled with thigh injuries during his time at Liverpool.
Injury at the wrong time – All-clear for Camavinga
Now, according to unanimous reports in the Spanish media, he is expected to be out for around two months. A bad end to 2025 and a modest start to the 2026 World Cup year.
At Real, Alexander-Arnold has made eight La Liga appearances and three Champions League appearances after five appearances in the Club World Cup.
In seven of those eleven games, the right-footed player was also in the starting lineup for Los Blancos. However, the injury comes at a very bad time. On the one hand, because Xabi Alonso currently has two other fullbacks missing through injury, captain Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy.
On the other hand, because Alexander-Arnold had finally been able to play two full La Liga games recently and recorded his first goal involvement in the 2025/26 competitive season in Bilbao – the assist for the 1-0. Alexander-Arnold is expected to miss a total of ten competitive games, including next Wednesday’s prestigious Champions League clash with Manchester City (9 p.m.).
At least Eduardo Camavinga, who also had to leave the game in Bilbao early due to injury, is expected to be available again for Sunday’s home game against Celta Vigo.
