Alvaro Arbeloa was let go by Real Madrid just at the beginning of June, and now the former pro already has a new job: The 43-year-old is taking over Premier League club FC Fulham.
The half-year that Álvaro Arbeloa spent on the sidelines at Real Madrid is unlikely to go down in the annals of the Galácticos—and if it does, it will probably be remembered as one of the worst periods in the recent history of this proud club. And yet the Spaniard, who won World and European championships as a player and claimed countless titles with Real, has proven himself worthy of another head coaching role. Just one month after his departure from Real, Fulham FC has announced Arbeloa as its new head coach.
“Álvaro is, as he himself admits, very ambitious,” explains Fulham co-owner Shahid Khan in a statement. “He has spent valuable time with the best players, clubs, and methods in soccer—experiences that will benefit him here at Fulham. Álvaro also has a keen interest in our youth development program and believes in giving young players a chance.” Arbeloa’s interest in youth development “and much more” makes him “the ideal choice to lead Fulham Football Club into the upcoming Premier League season and beyond.”
Marco Silva moved on to Benfica
The Cottagers finished the past season in 11th place in the Premier League, within striking distance of the European spots. Club officials had been searching for a new manager after Marco Silva decided to return to Benfica Lisbon in Portugal after five years. Arbeloa has now signed a contract through the summer of 2029.
“It is a great honor for me to begin this new chapter at Fulham FC. I feel a great sense of responsibility and am deeply grateful to Shahin Khan and Tony Khan for the trust they have placed in me,” said Arbeloa. “I’m really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage together with the Fulham fans and starting preseason training with the players next week. I’m confident that together we’ll embark on an incredible journey.”
