For a long time, everything seemed clear regarding Ferran Torres’s future. But now, Spain’s World Cup hero holds the best cards in the contract negotiations. And for FC Barcelona, it’s not just about this forward.
FC Barcelona never really gave Ferran Torres much thought. What else could the forward—who arrived from Manchester City in 2022 and played second fiddle to Robert Lewandowski for years—possibly want other than to extend his contract, which expires in 2027, and count himself lucky to continue playing for Barca? Especially now that Lewandowski—whom Torres had already displaced from the starting lineup on several occasions last season—is no longer there.
That was the scenario until the 106th minute of the World Cup final. Since then, everything has changed. That’s because the winning goal scored by “Ferran”—as he’s known in Spain—for the Spanish national team has put the Spaniard in the spotlight. Among others, PSG is reportedly showing serious interest, as is Liverpool FC.
Torres’s planned contract extension, which was supposed to be finalized this week, is thus turning into a thriller; right now, anything seems possible. A transfer, complete with a hefty transfer fee, would be a boon for Barça’s strained finances. But an expensive contract extension with the new national hero isn’t out of the question either, especially given the difficulties the club is facing with the planned signing of Julian Alvarez.
A Clear Statement from Madrid
That’s because his club, Atlético Madrid, has once again made it clear in recent days that Alvarez is fundamentally not for sale (and certainly not for the €500 million buyout clause). Barça president Joan Laporta did state: “We’ve made Atlético a great offer, and a big club can’t afford to have unhappy players.”
But it’s also clear that Barça can hardly afford a player who is being courted by, among others, the wealthier Real Madrid and Arsenal FC. It’s also conceivable, however, that Ferran could be included as part of a swap deal involving Alvarez between Barça and Atlético. Barça boss Laporta wants clarity by the end of July, including regarding Ferran Torres.
In any case, according to insiders, Ferran isn’t particularly pleased with Barça’s public pursuit of Alvarez. Sporting director Deco must be careful not to overplay his hand. Otherwise, instead of Alvarez and Ferran—the two players originally envisioned as Lewandowski’s successors—the club might end up with neither.
