Liverpool FC and Alexander Isak are almost there. According to consistent English media reports, Newcastle United has accepted a record offer from the Reds.
Alexander Isak gets his way: According to consistent English media reports, Liverpool FC and Newcastle United have agreed on a transfer for the 25-year-old striker, who had been pushing for a move for weeks and training in isolation.
According to these reports, the Reds are paying the equivalent of €144 million, breaking the Premier League transfer record recently set for Florian Wirtz (€125 million). On Monday, Isak is expected to undergo a medical examination with the reigning champions and league leaders and sign a six-year contract until 2031.
This brings the biggest transfer saga of this Premier League summer to an end with the desired outcome for Liverpool and Isak. The former Dortmund player made it clear early on that he was determined to leave Newcastle after three years. Since then, he has been training separately from the rest of the team and has issued a statement explaining that he cannot continue at Newcastle.
Woltemade transfer clears the way for Isak
The Magpies had initially rejected an offer of around €127 million, but with the last-minute signing of Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart for up to €90 million, the chances of Isak leaving had increased significantly. Newcastle fans also publicly broke with their striker, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, on Saturday.
If nothing goes wrong with the medical, Liverpool will increase its spending in this transfer window to over €450 million—with revenues of “only” a good €200 million. In addition to Wirtz (Leverkusen), Hugo Ekitiké (Frankfurt), whom Newcastle had unsuccessfully courted, also joined the club. Together with striker Mohamed Salah and Isak, they now form one of the highest-quality—and most expensive—attacking lines in Premier League history, which coach Arne Slot will first have to bring together.
Is Guehi coming too?
And Liverpool’s shopping spree may not be over yet. The Reds are hoping to sign center back Marc Guehi on today’s “Deadline Day.” However, an agreement with Crystal Palace, which first needs a replacement for its captain, has yet to be reached.
