New DBV head coach confirmed

Cuban Humberto Horta Dominguez is set to lead German boxers to medals at the Olympics in Los Angeles.

Cuban Humberto Horta Dominguez is the new head coach of the German Boxing Association (DBV). As the DBV announced on Tuesday, the 59-year-old has been responsible for the national team since February 1. He will be based at the new DBV center in Heidelberg.

Horta Dominguez has worked in Cuba, Russia, Azerbaijan, and most recently in France over the past three decades. There, he trained numerous Olympic medalists. “The clear goal is to gradually improve our medal rankings in the upcoming international competitions,” said the new coach.

Last year, German boxers came away empty-handed at the World Championships in Liverpool. At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Nelvie Tiafack, who has since turned professional, won bronze. This year, the European Championships are coming up in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia.

In the medium term, the signing of Horta Dominguez should translate into precious metal at the next Olympic Games. “We are firmly convinced that with the concept that has now been developed and with the new head coach, we can expect some medals in Los Angeles in 2028,” said DBV President Farid Vatanparast.
