The Oklahoma City Thunder responded perfectly to their opening loss in the Western Conference Finals. Led by a significantly improved Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the defending champions defeated the San Antonio Spurs 122–113 to tie the series at 1–1.
After a difficult first game, Gilgeous-Alexander was much more aggressive and efficient this time around. The MVP scored 30 points (12/24 FG, 9 AST) and got Oklahoma City’s offense into a rhythm early on. Overall, the Thunder’s offense looked much smoother than it did in the double-overtime loss in Game 1.
The support around Gilgeous-Alexander also worked much better this time. Alex Caruso contributed 17 points off the bench, while Chet Holmgren scored 13. Particularly notable: Oklahoma City dominated the points off turnovers 27-10 and received strong energy from the entire second unit, which scored a total of 57 points.
Isaiah Hartenstein also played a much bigger role this time. After playing just 12 minutes in Game 1, the German big man was on the court for 27 minutes and recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Hartenstein grabbed eight of his rebounds on the offensive end, repeatedly creating second-chance opportunities for the Thunder.
Spurs hang in there for a long time – Thunder pull away late
San Antonio kept the game close for a long time, though. Stephon Castle scored 25 points (8 ast, 9 TO), including a monster poster dunk over Isaiah Hartenstein. Devin Vassell added 22 points, while Victor Wembanyama once again dominated with 21 points, 17 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks. After a three-pointer by Harrison Barnes, the Spurs even cut the lead to 97-99 in the final quarter.
However, the defending champions’ decisive response came immediately. An 11-0 run put Oklahoma City back in double-digit lead and ultimately decided the game. The Spurs were once again without De’Aaron Fox and also lost rookie Dylan Harper in the third quarter to a leg injury after several unfortunate falls.
Oklahoma City also suffered a minor setback. Jalen Williams left the game early in the first half due to recurring thigh muscle issues. His availability for Game 3 in San Antonio remains questionable.
