Manchester United appears to be getting closer to signing Matheus Cunha. The former Leipzig and Berlin player would thus continue to climb his personal millionaire ladder.
Manchester United is currently having the worst season in its Premier League history, but that doesn’t mean England’s record champions are still unable to make big transfers. Although the Red Devils would have to win the Europa League to play internationally in 2025/26, and although it cannot be ruled out that they will change their coach again in the summer, a first costly new signing is on the cards.
For days now, there have been rumors in England that ManUnited is interested in Matheus Cunha, and now several media outlets are reporting that a transfer is getting closer and could even be finalized in the coming weeks. Because the 25-year-old Brazilian international has a release clause worth around €73 million at Wolverhampton Wanderers, at least between the clubs, no lengthy negotiations are necessary.
When he extended his contract with the Wolves in January, Matheus Cunha had already stated, “I have to take the next step. I want to play for titles, for big things,” the former Bundesliga professional told The Guardian. “I have potential.”
He has been demonstrating this regularly in the Premier League for two years: he has scored 28 goals and provided 11 assists in 77 appearances for Wolves, setting a new personal record with 14 goals in the current season, in which his club is tied with ManUnited in 15th place. By comparison, the Red Devils’ top scorer is Bruno Fernandes with eight goals.
Matheus Cunha has already committed two acts of violence in 2024/25
At Wolves, Matheus Cunha nominally plays as a left winger in a 3-4-3 formation, but usually moves into a second striker role – a role he could also play in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 at Manchester.
Should the temperamental attacking player, who has already served two suspensions for violent conduct this season, actually move to Old Trafford, he would also break his personal transfer record. After RB Leipzig paid €15 million to Sion for him in 2018, he became part of Hertha BSC’s spectacular winter transfer window a year and a half later for just under €20 million. In 2021, he moved to Atlético Madrid for €35 million, before Wolverhampton put around €50 million on the table in the summer of 2023 after a six-month loan spell. At two and a half years, the Wolves are already his longest spell in Europe.
