Antoine Griezmann (34) has extended his contract with Atlético Madrid, resisting the lure of the MLS, among others.
He is at an age when many stars of the scene are making their way to the US or the Middle East, and Antoine Griezmann had probably received offers to that effect. However, the 34-year-old Frenchman will remain in European top-flight football for the time being: As Atletico Madrid announced on Monday afternoon, Griezmann has extended his contract, which was originally due to expire in 2026, by another year and is now under contract until June 30, 2027.
In the past, Griezmann had repeatedly been linked with a move to a financially powerful league outside Europe. In 2023, he turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, and in 2024, MLS club Los Angeles FC wanted to sign the 2018 World Cup winner. According to reports, both options were still open to Griezmann this summer, but he decided to stay at Atletico.
Top scorer in club history
In two spells at Atletico – from 2014 to 2019 and then again since 2021 after an unsuccessful interlude at FC Barcelona – Griezmann has become the Colchoneros’ top scorer in the club’s history, winning the Europa League with Atletico in 2018 and scoring two goals in the final against Olympique Marseille.
He played in all 38 league games last season, but “only” scored eight goals. In the two previous seasons, he had scored 16 and 15 goals respectively. In the final stages of the season, Atletico coach Diego Simeone often used the veteran only as a substitute. With his contract now extended, Griezmann reportedly wants to make another attempt at winning a title with Atletico. The first opportunity for the attacking player will be at the Club World Cup this summer.
