In her opening match against the Brazilian Gabriela Cé, the tennis player from Hamburg faced little difficulty, apart from at the very start. She had recently faced criticism from Boris Becker.
Tennis player Eva Lys has progressed to the last 16 at the WTA tournament in São Paulo following an extended rain delay. Around a week and a half after her second-round exit at the US Open, the 24-year-old defeated local favourite Gabriela Cé 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 in her opening match. Due to the weather, the match was played over two days.
Although Lys lost her first service game against the Brazilian on Tuesday, she fought back immediately and secured three breaks of her own. In the second set, she squandered a 3–0 lead; following a rain delay, play did not resume on Tuesday with the score at 2–2 in the third set.
Lys makes a winning comeback
The brief match the following day also began with some back-and-forth action; after five breaks in 36 minutes, Lys converted her first match point after 2 hours and 36 minutes of total playing time. The world number 99 will now face Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska.
No other German players are in the draw in the Brazilian metropolis. At the US Open in New York in early September, Lys was knocked out by French Open winner Mirra Andrejewa 0–6, 2–6 and had to face criticism from tennis legend Boris Becker.
“I hope she becomes a little more realistic. “I thought she was very good last year, but this year she’s had a few problems – including health issues. I mean, she needs to be a bit more realistic in her assessment of her form this year,” was the clear view of the 58-year-old.
